Midpen Media Center Commissions Bay Area Artist for Public Mural Celebrating Historic Motion Study
Palo Alto, CA — [4.29.25] — Midpen Media Center, a community-focused media organization located at 900 San Antonio Road in Palo Alto, is proud to announce the commissioning of a new public art mural by acclaimed Bay Area artist Anne-Sophie Gaudet. The mural, titled Tribute to the Horse in Motion, currently being painted on the exterior of the Midpen Media Center building and is scheduled to finish production in the coming weeks.
The piece pays homage to the groundbreaking photographic studies of motion by Edward Muybridge (often spelled Eadweard Muybridge), originally commissioned under the direction of Leland Stanford, former Governor of California and founder of Stanford University. Muybridge’s work, a series of cabinet card photographs, was instrumental in the early development of motion pictures and remains a powerful symbol of innovation at the intersection of art and science.
Anne-Sophie Gaudet, whose contemporary mural work is known for its vibrant color palettes and dynamic storytelling, will interpret Muybridge’s iconic sequence of a horse in full gallop — a visual breakthrough that famously proved all four of a horse’s hooves leave the ground mid-stride.
“We are thrilled to be working with Anne-Sophie Gaudet to bring this historical reference to life through bold public art,” said Biana Z. Kovic, The Executive Director of the Midpen Media Center. “This mural not only enhances the cultural landscape of our community but also honors the pioneering spirit of media and technology that defines our region.”
The mural project aligns with Midpen Media Center’s mission to foster creativity, inclusivity, and education in the arts through accessible media and community engagement.
